Prior to her position with the Wood Ducks, Kay worked for her college news station and sports talk show, giving her a strong background in news and sports media.

We sat down with Kay to ask her opinion on the state of social media marketing today and what you can expect to hear from her at the summit:

What unique perspective do you bring to the summit?

I bring the sports aspect to the summit that maybe others do not. I think for the most part, all social media managers do similar things to keep ideas fresh and content new. I see things from a different side. Not only do I deal with fans on social media as a marketing tool, but I also have to balance my own personal social media, which I try to keep as private as possible.

What’s the most challenging part about social media?

The most difficult thing is making sure you reach as large an audience as possible. The demographic we have in Kinston doesn’t always have social media. I went from living in Boston to Kinston, so adjusting and learning new ways to market to fans was the hardest.

Social media is the fastest growing marketing strategy in the world. In college, what I learned most was ways to hit the demographic that works best for your company, but going from such a large market to such a small one was difficult.

What’s the most powerful thing about social media?

The most powerful and fascinating thing about social media is that you can post one thing here in Kinston and our fans in California or parents of players living in Canada can see what we are doing or posting. I love that instant connection you can have with fans and friends. It’s the easiest and quickest way to get the information out there.

I’m fascinated by social media. Every day I like to learn or teach myself something new about social media. It’s amazing how fast it changes, and I like that social media keeps me on my toes.

What do you think is the most important thing any business or individual should know about social media?

Consistency is key. You need to always have a social media plan. I have a calendar of days of the week so that we can keep up with daily posts. Content, content, content…have something out there all the time.

What are you most looking forward to about the summit?

Learning from the other speakers and bringing together people who do the same thing but in different ways.
